There’s a quote I’ve come across many times that goes something like this: “If you’re lucky enough to live by the sea, you’re lucky enough.” I feel very blessed to not only live by the sea, but also to have so many of my favorite hobbies involve the beautiful waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Some of my favorite pastimes include kayaking, snorkeling and stand-up paddleboarding.
Living by the Sea in the U.S. Virgin Islands – perfect for kayaking adventures. Kayaking provides me with opportunities to snorkel, swim and dive in areas that can’t be reached by larger boats. I pack up my gear, snorkel equipment, food and water and have everything I need for the day ahead. Then when I get to my destination, I pull my kayak ashore without disturbing the reefs and other marine ecosystems.
Some days, I just want to drive to my favorite beaches here on St. Thomas, or take a short ferry ride to St. John to go for a hike and snorkel among the many lush reefs of Virgin Islands National Park. I really enjoy snorkeling because it allows me to observe marine life without the equipment and cost required for a scuba diving excursion.
On days when I want to get a little more exercise and enjoy the sea from a different perspective, stand-up paddle boarding is my activity of choice. SUP is great when you want to venture away from shore and paddle along the beautiful, rugged coastline and enjoy the view of the sea from above. Because the water is crystal clear here, I will oftentimes see fish, rays and turtles below the surface, with many of the turtles coming by to say hello when they come up for air!
I truly love life here in St. Thomas. I was fortunate to be born and raised here, but what gives me the most joy is sharing my home with friends from the mainland and around the world, serving them a slice of paradise, even if just for a week.
